November is probably best known for featuring Thanksgiving, a time to celebrate gratitude with family and friends. However, November also marks American Diabetes Month, and there’s still time left to honor the occasion and take stock of how foot and ankle health connects to the management of this chronic condition.
Wayne Foot & Ankle Center is always here to help. In the blog below, we’ll explore how lifestyle choices, proper nutrition, and moderation can help you give thanks for healthy feet!
Fast Facts, Serious Risks
Connected to serious circulatory problems like PAD and nerve issues such as peripheral neuropathy, diabetes is a widespread and dangerous illness.
- Around 10.2% of NJ’s adult population currently struggles with diabetes.
- The illness affects all aspects of daily life, from nutrition to hygiene to mobility.
- Untreated diabetes can lead to hospitalization, dangerous infections, and worse.
There is good news, however: routine podiatric care can actually reduce the risk of amputation by up to 85%! That’s one of the reasons that the APMA strongly suggests that patients with diabetes visit a podiatrist once a year minimum for foot and ankle exams.
Dietary Do’s and Don’ts
The American Diabetes Association (ADA) emphasizes the power of a balanced diet in managing blood sugar and overall health.
To keep your Thanksgiving meal festive…
- DO focus on fiber-rich foods like whole grains, fruits, roasted vegetables, and legumes.
- DO choose lean protein sources like fish, poultry, beans, and lentils.
- DO Include healthy fats from avocados, nuts, seeds, and olive oil.
Of course, there are some options you’re better off limiting or avoiding, so…
- DON’T overindulge in sugary drinks and processed foods! Exercise moderation when it comes to dessert staples like pie, and try to go for fruit or low-sugar alternatives instead.
- DON’T forget that there’s sugar in alcohol! They’re sweeter than they taste.
Our team wishes you and yours a happy, healthy Thanksgiving! With vigilance and gratitude, you can keep the focus on family and fun.
