Pastimes at the pool are memories even the strongest summer heat can’t beat. But as we all know, pools can also harbor germs and bacteria that can lead to foot infections.

We at Wayne Foot & Ankle Center don’t want your child’s summer to potentially be ruined by a nasty fungus. So, let’s dive into the proper poolside podiatric etiquette to keep their feet healthy all break long.

Before You Hit the Pool

To create a barrier between your child’s feet and potentially contaminated surfaces, encourage them to wear flip-flops or pool shoes in all areas around the pool, especially locker rooms and restrooms.

Before hitting the water, help your child rinse their feet with clean water at an outdoor rinsing station. This simple step helps remove dirt, debris, and any lingering germs they may have picked up while walking barefoot. Frequent handwashing throughout the day also prevents the spread of germs from your child’s hands to their feet.

Poolside Protection

  • Minimize Barefoot Time: Limit the amount of time your child spends barefoot around the pool deck. Hot concrete can not only burn their feet, but it can also be a breeding ground for bacteria.
  • Frequent Towel Drying: Throughout the day, take breaks to dry your child’s feet thoroughly with a clean towel. Wet feet are more susceptible to fungal infections like athlete’s foot.
  • Open Wound Protection: If your child has a cut or band-aid, make sure it stays on throughout the day. Purchase waterproof band-aids to ensure a tight seal.

After the Pool

When you get home, give your child a warm bath with soap to remove any remaining chlorine that could irritate their skin.

Once their feet are clean, dry thoroughly between the toes to prevent trapped moisture and leftover pool chemicals from causing problems. Also, be sure to examine your child’s feet for any signs of infection, such as redness, itching, cracking, or blisters.
